EASTER MESSAGE

the easter bunny

They are CUTE! ... BUT are you ready for a bunny?

All too often well intentioned people adopt bunnies ..especially at EASTER.. as gifts or playmates for children. Alas, when the novelty wears off, the bunnies are too often dumped at our local Shelters, let loose to fend for themselves or worse, injured or killed by dogs and/or other predators.

As for bunnies at EASTER.... or as gifts, instead, consider fostering or donating to a local Rabbit Rescue/Shelter or ... we prefer to

M A K E ... M I N E ... C H O C O L A T E

In keeping with the season, you can instead have on "paw" a variety of Easter candy favorites...

chocolate easter bunny with eggs

Including chocolate bunnies! But remember, our snacks of chocolates and candies are for people.

Please keep them away from cats/pets as they are TOXIC!

FFF wishes you and yours a safe and wonderful EASTER.

***** EASTER ALERT *****

Easter Lilies (along with many other plants), Plastic Easter Grass,
Candies and Chocolate are TOXIC to cats.
Please keep these where your cat/pet can not get them!

For a list of plants toxic to cats, please visit
The Cat Fancier's Association website.

ALL OF US AT FFF, STAFF and FELINES, wish you and yours a restful and HAPPY EASTER.

POISONOUS LILIES!

Important Reminder! Easter is just around the corner and lily plants are as deadly as they are beautiful. If you are gifted a plant or a bouquet with lilies, please don't keep it in the house.

The entire lily plant — leaf, flower, and pollen — are all poisonous to cats. Even if a cat licks a few pollen grains off their coats or eats a couple of leaves, they can suffer acute kidney failure within a very short period of time.

I AM NOT AN EASTER GIFT

OUR FEATURED EASTER CATS...

Malcolm, Sister, Ms Dooley, & Beauregard

Malcolm is the brother of Martin. They are healthy, ACTIVE, and endlessly entertaining cats. We would prefer to have them adopted together.

Malcolm is quite a character. Of the two Bros, he is the most curious and mischievous. He is active and loves to romp with his brother, Martin. He does play with other unrelated active cats. He is affectionate with people he knows and loves attention.

Malcolm has been in an adult foster home so does not have any experience in a family setting with children or dogs. It is unclear how he would adjust to these new situations.

He is current on his FVRCP shot, combo tested negative for Feline AIDS and leukemia, and is neutered.

He enjoys a safe, enclosed outdoor space to explore. Because of his activity level and familiarity with the enclosed outdoor experience, he would do best by having an ENCLOSED outdoor catio.

Sister - "The phone rang in the midst of a busy morning. It was my cranky neighbor on the ranch next door ... asking a favor. Seems a friendly, stray kitten has made herself at home on his property and come onto his trailer. His resident "post-feral" resident cat was NOT AMUSED. Fearing for the safety of the kitten, he called for our help at the Sanctuary property foster home to take her in. Needless to say, we couldn't refuse. She came in under our FFF SO.L. at-risk program.

We named the kitten SISTER because she was instantly everyone's sister. And an independent and capable, no-nonsense "Sister "! Her nickname is “sister girl" as she is one tough sister! She grew to be a loving, independent, resourceful kitty who knows her mind and chooses her friends.

She is definitely in charge and would prefer being the center of attention but has adjusted to sharing space with friendly, nonaggressive other fosters.

She is an INDOOR cat only and seems fine with no longer having to survive outside. She is current on FVRCP, combo tested negative and spayed

MS DOOLEY came to us with her two brothers, Tiny Tim and Chupa. The trio came. in under the FFF S.O.L. Program for at-risk cats and kittens. All were very underweight, full of parasites, and battling urinal and intestinal issues.

MS DOOLEY has beaten the odds and developed into a confident, active, acrobatic cat. She loves to climb and explore places in the house.

She is loving and affectionate and gets along with other non-aggressive cats. She gives her wrestling brothers as good as she gets.

Ms Dooley has become quite independent and the gymnast! She loves to climb and seeks high spaces. Would do fine as only cat or with friendly other cats who she could engage in play initiated by her. Once she gets to know a person, she can be quite sffectionate and will seek human companionship. MS DOOLEY would make a loving and loyal companion for a family of her choosing and/ or individuals who enjoy an affectionate but independent and smart kitty companion.

MS Dooley is shown via our appointment program of HAVE CAT WILL TRAVEL.

Beauregard aka Beau is a beautiful, active and playful boy.

He and his brother BART love to rip and run but are also affectionate and loving with people. Beau has developed into a dominant cat and more people-oriented. He tends to dominate other cats and would be best as an only cat. He would do well in a family and with his brother, Bart. However, we are currently working with him to discourage his "love bites" and mouthing for attention. His home would need to continue to discourage this behavior.

BREAKING NEWS

"He died a hero": About 100 cats and sanctuary owner die in fire.

Chris Arsenault with one of his cats

A man who ran a sanctuary for rescued and abused cats "died a hero" Monday after a fire broke out at a safe haven he ran for felines in New York State.

The blaze took place Monday morning at Happy Cat Sanctuary in Medford on Long Island, the Suffolk County Police Department reported.

Officials and friends confirmed Chris Arsenault, 65, was killed in the blaze at the single-family home along with "numerous" cats.

"In excess of 100 deceased and living cats were found," William Doherty, police chief of detectives told reporters during a press conference Monday. At the time, officials were still working to locate the exact number of dead animals.

"Chris died a hero," said Amanda Rumble, founder of Community Cat Care in Michigan, adding she knew Arsenault through the rescue industry. "Chris was an amazing guy with a heart of gold. He dedicated his life to saving cats. He was in the middle of building an amazing new location to (move) the sanctuary to. The whole situation is absolutely heart wrenching."

Pets are not presents!

Responsible pet adoption during the holidays and around special occasions can be summed up very simply: pets are not presents.

Many dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals are given as gifts only to end up at animal shelters shortly after they are gifted. They face an uncertain and typically grim future.

You might find it difficult to resist surprising your kid with a puppy or kitten, or presenting a pet to your parents, but the reasons not to do so are more compelling.

Pets are forever

Although lifespan varies by species, breed and other factors, nearly 40% of dogs live more than 10 years. The average indoor cat will live 14-16 years.

The recipient might not be prepared for a gift that requires a long-term commitment, financially and in terms of their lifestyle.

FFF POLICIES

Adopting a Friend

An interview, application and home visit, followed by a 5-7 day trial visit of the selected pet in the prospective adoptive home. An Animal Care Adoption Contract is required to be signed by the adopter and a FFF representative, and a recovery/adoption fee is tenderedThe adopter(s) must be of legal age to sign a legal contract.

FFF does NOT allow FFF animals to be given as gifts or adopted for third parties.

FFF would appreciate a contribution to help offset our veterinary costs which include:

  • Combo test for FeLV and FIV (feline leukemia and feline AIDS)
  • First FVRCP
  • Spay or Neuter
  • Pain medications for recovery
  • De-worming
  • Flea control
  • Microchip

Special circumstance adoptions are available for eligible adopters.

Micro-Chipping

In an effort to provide our FFF graduates, their families, and our dedicated FFF fosters/staff with peace of mind, we are exploring micro chipping all of our adoptees. This will provide a safety net for our formerly friendless felines that go on to their new homes.

If FFF begins microchipping, then FFF will be listed as the secondary contact in the event that an emergency or unforeseen circumstance causes them to be lost, stolen or strayed. This should make sure that our FFF adoptees will always have a friend if they are in need and always be "formerly friendless".

Appointments

We show our cats by appointments at your home. Appointments can be made with FFF through our HAVE CAT WILL TRAVEL Program, (925) 808-8364. Availability of the cats or kittens for appointment depends on the availability of the foster and transportation arrangements. If you see a cat or kitten you are interested in on our website, contact Sally via our email or by phone to check on the availability of that cat or kitten for evening appointments.

Adoption Criteria

As a rule, FFF prefers not to offer kittens until all veterinary test results are normal. All FFF cats and kittens are combo tested for feline AIDS and feline Leukemia prior to adoption. Therefore, we will not release any cat or kitten for adoption until we can be assured of an accurate test result.

FFF's philosophy:

We will not knowingly adopt any cat or kitten into your home that we wouldn't place in our own homes. We appreciate your understanding.

IS YOUR PET A WORK OF ART ?

The Perfect Gift For That Animal Lover In Your Life!!

Friends of the Formerly Friendless has an ongoing fundraiser. We can now take a photo of your favorite pet(s) and turn it into art. May it be stylish neon. Andy Warhol styled, or Van Gogh styled watercolor, you send us your photo and we will send you various styles for you to choose from.

The image you send does not need to be high quality as we will make the necessary adjustments for you. All we need is a clear photo of your pet(s) and we will take care of the rest. We will send you 4 variations for you to choose from.

Once you choose your style, we will send you a high quality image for $25 that you can either take to have made it into a photo or framed. Or, you can have it printed on canvas. For $50, you get an 12"x14" print or for $75 you can get an 18"x24". Depending on how the picture is taken, the image will be either landscape or portrait.

These unique "works of art" make wonderful gifts for that special person in your life.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS ...

  • Step 1 Email your pet's image to [email protected].
  • Step 2 Proofs will be emailed to you to approve.
  • Step 3 Choose which proof you want and email us so we may create your selected specialized image(s) or indicate if you would like it reproduced on canvas.
  • Step 4 Remit the payment for your specialized image using the PayPal methods below (PayPal, Debit or Credit Card). Remember, images cost $25 while canvases cost $50 and $75 depending on the size.
  • Step 5 Your specialized image will be emailed directly to you. If you choose one of the canvases, it will be mailed to you directly from the company we will be using. Please include address so we may ship the canvas to you. Sorry, but the company we use does not ship to PO Boxes.

Please visit our Fundraising page for more information.
